Compiled by Radif Partners from the CMS landscape file of September 2026 · How the data is read

New Mexico enters 2027 with 39 Medicare Advantage plans open to anyone with Parts A and B, 11 fewer than the 50 filed for 2026, and the cuts hit the cities hardest. Bernalillo County, home to Albuquerque, now lists 21 open plans after 17 plan IDs from 2026 were not renewed. What remains is cheap at the counter: 29 of the drug-covering plans charge no premium, the highest premium anywhere in the state is $66 a month, and the median in-network cap is $5,900, below the national $6,550. UnitedHealth Group, Inc. files 22 of the open plans. Rural counties such as Harding, Otero, Union have only 3 to 3. 22 special needs plans, 12 of them for chronic conditions, and 10 stand-alone drug plans are listed below.

Albuquerque's shrinking menu

Of all the changes in New Mexico's 2027 file, the turnover in the Rio Grande corridor is the one most likely to land in a mailbox. Bernalillo and Sandoval each had 34 open plans for 2026; each has 21 now. Santa Fe County went from 31 to 20. If your plan is among those ended, the insurer's notice is not a formality: you have a special window to pick a replacement, either another Advantage plan or Original Medicare (42 CFR 422.62). The county pages list every plan ID that ended.

One dominant carrier

UnitedHealth Group, Inc. (22), Humana Inc. (9), Devoted Health, Inc. (6), Health Care Service Corporation (2): that is the full list of parent companies filing open plans, 4 in all. When one company holds more than half the plans, its provider contracts shape access for the whole state, so check whether your clinic and hospital are in a plan's network before looking at the premium.

A plan that leads on every measure

Humana Total Complete (HMO) is at once the highest-rated open plan (4.5 stars), a $0 premium plan, and the plan with the lowest cap in the state, $3,800. It is an HMO, and HMO networks in New Mexico concentrate in the larger towns. In Harding, Otero, Union, with 3 plans each, the choice is mostly between PPOs from national carriers, which by definition also pay for covered care outside their network (42 CFR 422.4).

Questions people ask

Why are so many Medicare Advantage plans leaving New Mexico in 2027?

Insurers withdrew 11 open plans statewide between the 2026 and 2027 CMS files, most visibly in Bernalillo County, where 17 plan IDs ended. Companies decide county by county, based on costs and payments. Affected members get a notice and a special enrollment period to choose another plan or Original Medicare.

What is the most expensive Medicare Advantage premium in New Mexico for 2027?

The highest monthly premium among New Mexico's open plans is $66, low by national standards, and 29 drug-covering plans charge $0. Premiums are in addition to the Part B premium, $202.90 a month in 2026. A low premium can come with a high cap, so compare both.

How many Medicare Advantage plans are there in rural New Mexico counties?

The smallest menus for 2027 are in Harding (3), Otero (3), Union (3) counties, per the CMS file of September 2026. Every New Mexico county has at least one open plan. In those counties the plans are mostly PPOs, which still pay for covered care outside their network, so a long drive to an in-network clinic is not the only option.
